The Military Mind Set

RISK Founder & Managing Director, joined the army as a boy soldier at 16 and worked his way through the ranks to RSM in 1998. Specialising in managing, organising and instructing training courses in diverse skills, Mike’s transition to civvy street utilised this experience and the military mindset to create one of the UKs most respected specialist safety management training organisations with a number of ex-service personnel delivering the training.

Mike joined the Army at 16, serving as a boy soldier in the Royal Engineers at Old Park Barracks Dover.

On successfully completing basic training, Mike served in Germany and Northern Ireland, during this time he also returned to the Royal School of Military Engineering (RSME) Chatham, to complete technical trade training as a plant operator mechanic. After successfully completing the various courses to CITB and City and Guild standards Mike returned to Northern Ireland for a lengthy period attached to 45 Commando Group.

Commando values, ethos and work ethic

The Commando values, ethos and general way of working appealed, and so Mike subsequently volunteered and successfully passed the All Arms Commando Course.

Mike was employed in a variety of roles firstly as an Explosives Engineer but also specialised in managing, organising and instructing training courses in diverse skills – Fast RIB handling, Arctic, Jungle and Chemical Warfare, Military Intelligence and Resistance to Interrogation.

Mike also completed various operational deployments with the Commando Brigade – UK, Canada, Norway, The Falklands, Ascension Islands, Sardinia, Cyprus, Hong Kong, Brunei, Austria, Holland, Denmark and Germany.

Injury opened up a different path on the road to civvy street

After being injured whilst on operations, Mike returned to the RSME for a period of convalescence. During this period Mike was given the responsibility of mapping military qualifications with equivalent civilian competencies. This resulted in lengthy discussions with CITB and the introduction and modification of various senior management courses at the RSME.

24 years of military service then medical retirement

Having completed 24 years of military service, mainly in Commando Forces Mike was medically retired having reached the rank of WO1/Regimental Sergeant Major.

Due to his experience working alongside CITB, Mike was asked to provide input and revitalise some of the Construction Management courses then delivered by the CITB.

Risk and Safety Management Services Ltd (RISK) was born shortly afterwards (1997) and quickly became a key provider throughout the UK in providing a variety of supervisory and management courses for the construction industry.

RISK has since expanded to also include a full range of NEBOSH and IOSH management level courses for all industry throughout the UK and on occasion has delivered training internationally (Ireland, Uganda, and the Ukraine).
