What Jon Clark-Sutton thinks of SMSTS

When Project Engineer Jon Clark-Stutton was asked to go on the SMSTS course by his company, GBE London, his concerns for the course were soon put at ease by course Tutor Dave Pettit.

What is SMSTS?

SMSTS stands for Site Management Safety Training Scheme and it is a significant certificate for anyone who wants to pursue a career as site supervisor/manager or project manager in construction. It can also be a great asset for construction clients and company owners.

“I was asked to go on the SMSTS course by my company. I really didn’t know what to expect but I had heard that the course was quite complex.

On my arrival, the venue was great, the facilities were good and a good atmosphere.

“Our tutor Dave was a extremely nice guy, very easy to talk to and was very explanatory when it come down to the lesson. The lessons were never rushed and were well thought out and you were always given time to go through things if you didn’t understand or there was a discussion to have.

Throughout the course, I was progressively getting worried about the end test but I have to say that Dave did put my mind at rest.

All in all I would say the course is well worth doing and the end result is a respectable qualification that is recognised on all sites across the UK. One that is needed if you are a site manager/supervisor.”

Jon Clark-Sutton, Project Engineer for GBE London

Who is SMSTS for?

The Site Management Safety Training Scheme SMSTS course is for all site managers who work within civil engineering, construction and or have responsibility for any part of site management. There are no formal qualifications needed to attend the SMSTS course but experience within construction is recommended.

The SMSTS training course enables managers to organise and monitor the Health and Safety performance on site, providing them with the skills to establish and maintain safe access systems which satisfy current HSE legislation. The CITB SMSTS course can be delivered on a weekly or day release basis. It is more in-depth than the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) and demonstrates how to meet the demand for good health and safety management on site.

12 focus areas of SMSTS:

  • The Health and Safety at Work Act
  • Risk assessments/method statements
  • Occupational health management
  • Behavioural safety
  • CDM (Construction Design and Management) Regulations
  • Recent changes in accepted working practices
  • Confined spaces
  • Scaffolding
  • Electricity
  • Demolition
  • Working at height
  • Excavations

This industry leading course will provide delegates in a Project / Site Management role with essential knowledge and understanding on responsibilities and accountability for site safety.
